Foundations to Flatwork
We offer a variety of service in all phases of concrete from foundations to flatwork. We service the needs of customers ranging from residential, commercial, civil, decorative to repair. For clarification purposes we have defined some of the most common words used in the concrete industry.
Service Definitions
Flatwork – Common word used for concrete floors, driveways, basements, and sidewalks (any concrete that is placed to make a flat surface). www.homebuildingmanual.com
Footer, footing – Continuous 8″ or 10″ thick concrete pad installed that supports the foundation wall.
Rebar, reinforcing bar – Ribbed steel bars installed in foundations, concrete walls, footers, and poured-in-place concrete structures. Rebar is designed to strengthen concrete and it comes in various thicknesses and strength grades.
Retaining walls – are built in order to hold back ground which would otherwise move downwards. The purpose is to stabilize slopes and provide useful areas at different elevations, e.g. terraces for agriculture, buildings, roads and railways. – Wikipedia
Foundation walls – Concrete wall poured in the shape of the building on top of the footing, can be poured in several thicknesses to accommodate the structure. – Ross
Psi – Pounds per square inch, the measurement used to determine the strength of concrete. – Ross
A concrete curb – is a raised edge where pavement/sidewalk/footpath, road median, or road shoulder meets an unraised street or other roadway. They are typically made from concrete, a curb and gutter serves two primary purposes: first as a gutter for proper drainage of the roadway, and second for safety, to prevent motorists from driving onto the shoulder, median, sidewalk, or
pavement.
Stamped concrete – is concrete that is patterned, textured or embossed to resemble animals, brick, slate, flagstone, stone, tile, wood, and various other patterns and textures. Stamped concrete is commonly used for patios, sidewalks, driveways, pool decks, and interior flooring. The ability of stamped concrete to resemble other building materials makes stamped concrete a less expensive alternative to using those other authentic materials such as stone, slate or brick. – Wikipedia
Stained concrete – Stain (available in various colors and applications) applied to cured concrete to color the top layer, not integral (not colored past the top layer). – Ross
Integral color is the procedure where the entire volume of concrete is dyed the base color. The entire volume of concrete is colored by adding the color hardener to the concrete truck, and allowing all the concrete in the truck to be dyed. – Wikipedia
